La sua attività di ricerca, rivolta allo studio della biologia della riproduzione, del tessuto muscolare e del sistema nervoso, ha riguardato indagini strutturali ed ultrastrutturali, svolte prevalentemente su base comparativa, che si sono avvalse di metodiche istologiche, istochimiche, immunoistochimiche e biochimiche: i risultati ottenuti sono stati oggetto di più di centoventi di pubblicazioni a stampa.
È membro dell'American Association of Anatomists, della Società Italiana delle Scienze Veterinarie, dell'Associazione Italiana Morfologi Veterinari.
Al fine di valorizzare l'attività scientifica, didattica e di formazione e per approfondire la morfologia comparata dei vertebrati selvatici, ha curato, per conto dell'Ente Parco Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga, l'allestimento di un museo di zoologia relativo alla fauna del suo territorio e, più in generale, dell' Appennino Centrale.
